It is actually hard to tell when this radio station started broadcasting. The 102.9 MHz FM frequency began operations in 1962. It hosted many different radio stations with different music genres including middle of the road music, Top 40 format, and progressive rock until in 2000 it became occupied by W4 country. The callsign WWWW was also in use on other frequencies for radios with various formats for quite a long time before it was assigned to 102.9 FM. According to various ratings W4 Country is the highest-rated commercial radio station in Ann Arbor. And even if we take into account non-commercial radio stations that broadcast in this region, WWWW-FM would still be one of the most rated radio stations.
