Radio Araucana FM nació el día 1º de Enero del año 1960, transformándose así en XQD 1, la primera radio de Frecuencia Modulada en Chile, y la segunda en Latinoamérica. Su primer transmisor, marca Gates y americano, comenzó a transmitir cinco horas diarias a partir del año 1961. En noviembre de ese mismo año, aumentó sus emisiones a nueve horas diarias, y ya para el año 1964 llegó a transmitir doce horas continuadas. Por el año 1970, Radio Araucana incluía bloques juveniles y el domingo, desde las 16:00 hrs. hasta las 21:00 hrs., hacía un recuento de los mejores temas en la Araucana. El año 1972, llegó a ser la más dinámica con transmisiones ininterrumpidas durante las 24 hrs. del día. El 20 de noviembre de ese mismo año 1972, Araucana importó un generador Collins estéreo y un transmisor de la misma marca y comenzó así con la alta fidelidad en el sonido. El año 1981, instaló su torre en lo alto del Cerro Ñielol, a 180 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar. Desde allí se ha convertido en la principal fuente de comunicación, compañía e información de los habitantes de la Región de La Araucanía.
